Bust Head

English Style Ale

Tasting Notes:

Brewed in the tradition of an English Pale Ale, but infused with the spirit of new American craft brews, our flagship beer is drinkable, balanced, and enjoyable year-round. Additions of Goldings, Fuggle, and Cascade hops provide our pale ale with the aroma of floral hop tones, as well as imparting a refreshing, clean bitterness. Our use of caramel malt in the grain bill balances out our generous hop additions, and provides the beer with a smooth and bready backbone.

Fact Sheet

About the Name:

Our first brew, Bust Head, pays homage to an old Fauquier county crossroads just down from the 1700’s homestead that OBH founders Ike and Julie Broaddus call home. While the farm road is called Old Bust Head to this day, the crossroads is gone, and nothing remains of the corner shop that once gave rise to the unusual nickname.

About the Name:

Happily, all is not lost–old maps still show where the blacksmith shop and wheelwright shop took advantage of the crossroads traffic, and the old-timers still tell stories of how the corner came to be known as ‘Bust Head'.

Some say, the locals came up with the nickname when a neighbor fell off his horse after ‘overindulging’ at the corner shop one evening.  Others say those who imbibed at the shop were partial to Saturday night fights, or that they just fell down and busted their heads on the rough old country road.  Whatever the true story may be, clearly the locals who dubbed the corner ‘Bust Head’ enjoyed not only the potent libations brewed there, but also a little good humor.

So, raise a glass of our exquisitely balanced Bust Head English Pale Ale, and join us in saluting those who keep things playfully in perspective, and make life a bit more enjoyable for all of us.
